Hello,

I just went upstairs to feed our Betta and he has one bulging eye. The other eye looks fine. Is this some kind of disease (I know there is some disease that makes eyes bulge but I figured that would involve both eyes) or has he injured himself? I cleaned out his tank yesterday and put a new decoration in it. It's just a small turtle. What should I do? Thanks so much!

Check the tank to make sure there are no sharp objects. What you might think as not sharp can sometimes be deadly/very hurtful to a fish.

If you have no corners or edges, then he has popeye disease. Cure-able! You can goto your local store and get standard meds to cure that popeye.

What size is the tank? How often do you change the water?

Thanks so much for the help. I've taken the turtle out if it was that. We're snowed in so I'll be able to get out tomorrow for the meds. Can a fish get popeye in only one eye? The betta is in a one gallon tank and I change the water every week to week and a half. We've had this guy I'm guessing for a couple of years already and I've never had anything like this before, so I'm worried about him. Thanks so much!

Hello purpleiris,

This can indeed be an injury, or it can me an accumulation of fluid in the eye socket. It's most likely a symptom of something, rather than an actual disease.

How do you clean out his tank? Do you wipe it clean or do you just change the water? You don't want to go crazy cleaning out a tank as that may cause a decrease in beneficial bacteria, potentially causing a deterioration in water quality (especially if the tank is unfiltered). And yes, popeye can occur in just one eye. It's more common in both, though. That leads me to believe this could very well be an injury.

I would do partial water changes everyday until he gets better. If that doesn't work, a broad spectrum-antibiotic might be needed.

David

My personal opinion is that you need to change the water more often. A week and a half is a long time for 1 gallon tank. I change my 10 gallon tanks every week and alot of those only have one betta in them. My 2.5 gallon tanks get changed every Wednesday and Saturday.

If you had a couple of live plants in there you would be able to get by with changing the water less frequently. To answer you question, yes, it is possible to get popeye in one eye. It could be an injury and built up fluid, but i'm leaning more to popeye.

While your waiting due to the massive snow ins, you can do a little home treatment quite easily. Change half the water every day, and add half a teaspoon of Epsom Salt. Make sure its the plain kind, no added stuff. Do not use table salt. Very bad. Most table salt contains Iodine.

Anyways, if you dont have epsom salt, just change half the water every day until you can go get some meds.
