I have one cleaner shrimp, and to my knowledge it has eaten 2 of my blue legged hermits!!! "maybe more"

I have counted them and I used to have 10. Right this second it is in the process of eating one right now.

Is this normal??? should I not have crabs w/cleaner shrimp?

VERY STUMPED!!!

Donates their time to make FishGeeks better.
Is the shrimp killing your crabs and eating them or are the crabs dead/dying then it moves in for lunch?

What type of cleaner shrimp? There are many.

Lysmata amboinensis is probably the most common, which I can't remember hearing of one that ate hermit crabs.

Maybe, Stenopus hispidus. Wait til your hermits start whacking your snails cause it's their time of the month or whatever, you'll be glad there out of there. Never trust a crab, that's just me though.

Cleaner shrimp cant kill a hermit one the hermit is much more powerful, the minute the hermit fights back the cleaner would get out of their fast. Your hermits are probally dieing and thne the cleaner shrimp are just eating them. Jackos right hermits will attack snails not only for their shell but also just for food.

That is exactly what I thought!

And I only have 2 fish, a percula clown and a spotted blenny, and as far as I know they are very friendly fish.

I don't have test kits, but every time I have brought my water to a LFS it has been perfect.

Is there any obvious reason a crab would die???

really hard to say perculas can often be violent and you wouldnt know it. Overdose of iodine, overdoes on specific metals(but with the metals you would see everything being affected). Iodine usualy only affects inverts and sometimes snails and hermits. only other thing is if your temp drops below 70 or above 85 but then agian your other fish would feel it. I cant really tell you with out your paramaters, set up, substrate, filters, other then that maybe lack of food.

I had just recently been adding Kent Marine "Coral Accel" my LFS told me this would bring out colors in my LR.

This sounds like it could be the problem b/c they started dieing ever since I started with this product.

Should I just stop adding it, or just do less then what it says to do?

the directions say add a teaspoon for every 50g. every day. I add a half a teaspoon 2 or 3 times a week, "this is what my LFS told me to do" my tank is 30g

then its definitly not the accels stuff, anyways also it would probally affect other things in your tank. please tell me your paramaters, set up, substrate, filters, other then that maybe lack of food.

The infamous "the LFS guy told me to do this".....
Don't feel bad, we've all fell for that line before...

I don't believe in using ANY chemicals in my tank.... UNLESS they replace any "needed" trace elements (iodide, calcium etc.)... And then I would use ONLY that eklement to correct the deficiency (sp?)

I'm almost willing to guarantee that there is phosphates (PO4) in the tank.. Kent is know for having it in their "suppliments"... I'm interested in hearing what kind of water you are using to replace evaporation, or mixing salt with... Inverts, such as snails, don't take well to poor water params.,.. So, I'm thinking your doing something to the tank to kill them off, and the cleaner, is getting a meal from it....
