I put some Calupera in my tank a week ago to help with the stabilizing of my nitrates. I just read from another post that this macro can over run the tank and actually could be a big problem unless it is pinched back. I have a handfull of it in a clump and placed it under some rock to keep it in place. How is it to be pinched back? 1/2 inch or more? Do I have to find the ends and pinch there? I hear that the brillo macro(do not know the name) is much better. Looking for some guidance before I wait too long on this potential problem. Thanks.

Cheato algae I think you are reffering to as brillo algae. It doesnt suffer from some of the problems other algeas like the caulerpa do such as completely going asexual.

Donates their time to make FishGeeks better.
Chaeto isn't very pleasant to look at though...

I believe that if you leave the cap in your sump and leave it under light 24/7 it will be okay in terms of going sexual. I think the light cycles is what stimulates it. Some of the other caps do really well and flurhish without the going sexual thing.

STOP LOOK LISTEN...NEVER, I MEAN NEVER EVER put calupera in your tank for any reason whatsoever!!!! I don't care what kind it is. Laws forbid it's intro to warmer states for good reason. I have a tank that I now have to break down because of cut leaf calupera. I had the same reasoning as you and now fully regret my error. This plant doesn't need to go sexual. It is a terrorist that works for the Bin Laden trying to destroy the marine industry. No ####!

Some people have nice planted tanks which work very well chubosco and some do it so supply tangs with constant food to graze on, there are many caluerpas which some are more prone to problems than others .

I wouldnt add it to the main tank for many reasons but thats not to say some havent and still do successfully. I would always choose cheato for the sump though, grows quickly and as far as I know will not go sexual.

I agree... cularpa is not fun to have in a tank long term... chaeto is much better. It may not be as pretty but you better like cularpa as it will overtake your entire tank!!!

As for pruning macro in general... yea just cut some of it up. Try to make clean cuts, or if it is chaeto take it out of the tank to cut up. This is so you don't release little pieces back into the tank.
