| Description and Specific Information |
| This genus was constructed by Boulenger in 1898. This fish is a preditory fish with atypical teeth for a cichlid. The triangular teeth are like needles and the inner rows lie flat until raised by the fish when it grasps prey. The streamlined body, cruising habits, and camouflaged color and color patterns are very reminiscent of the marine barracuda.
The fish spawns in groups and the females carries the eggs. The young are discharged into schools of other small fishes which hug the sandy shores. The young feed on these small fish till they are about 3-4 inches long. They then head out for the deeper waters to search for other smaller fishes, but most of them are then eaten by even larger predatory fish. |
